Wiring the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) For a Wireless Future
Each work day, DISA employees log-in to the agency’s unclassified network through a virtual private network. This network was developed when DISA moved to Maryland from Virginia under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. The DISA mission includes providing its mission partners with mobile solutions. Over time, there has been a growing demand from internal DISA users to have the same mobility as DISA Department of Defense (DoD) customers. Users want to work wirelessly, from any device. As such, mobility has now been identified as a major factor impacting overall mission performance. Security risks, accountability, and infrastructure budgets have all remained top concerns when moving to an environment that is now considered normal in a private, consumer-driven IT environment. As part of bringing DISA to the forefront of virtualization, the DISA Chief Information Officer (CIO) spearheaded an initiative to launch wireless local area network (WLAN) capabilities for the DISA campus. The campus at Fort Meade is a sprawling 1.1 million square feet. The Agency faced the challenge of implementing one of the first large-scale DoD WLAN systems while meeting strict security guidelines.
Indigo IT is currently leading the successful installation of the Fort Meade WLAN solution. This solution will meet users’ mobility needs and DISA’s significant security requirements. By adhering to a process-driven methodology for development, implementation, testing, and maintenance, Indigo IT has been able to provide a repeatable, phased solution that can be applied across all agency locations. We use common technology and equipment within a unique approach, designed to effectively communicate and collaborate with stakeholders across DISA. Working side-by-side with DISA IT security personnel, our team has ensured that the WLAN implementation features enhanced intrusion detection that meets all federal and DoD standards. Indigo IT will continue to work closely with our partners at DISA to deliver a reliable and secure WLAN to all end-users, ultimately enabling mission success.
The Indigo Difference:
Indigo differentiates from other IT providers through a commitment to mastering every aspect of service delivery. No matter how complex the challenge is, our people take a 360 degree view and are typically the “first to solve.” Faced with the complexity of implementing a secure WLAN on a sprawling campus, while carrying out a critical mission, our team was able to immediately identify who to include, when to include them, and how to calculate the critical path to success. At Indigo IT, we think ahead so you stay ahead.
