Returning the Favor to our Nation’s Heroes at Walter Reed
Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:28

There is no repaying the tremendous sacrifices given for our country, freedom, and rights by the wounded warriors at Walter Reed Medical Center (WRAMC)—a gift these soldier gave freely. However, this holiday season Indigo IT, a local 8(a) Information Technology firm, is thanking them by filling an unmet need. Upon arrival at WRAMC, wounded warriors receive only standard-issue slippers and pajamas for use during their recovery unless family or friends bring additional items. Among other things, that means no running shoes for physical therapy. “Running shoes are all-purpose and the most comfortable to use in a rehabilitative setting,” explained Mr. Stephen Maguire, Director of the Soldier and Family Assistance Center at WRMAC and a former wounded warrior himself, when contacted about the Center’s greatest needs.

Many within this firm of approximately 30 have loved ones impacted by Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, and were enthusiastic about donating money to purchase running shoes. Indigo IT is partnering with local running store, Footsteps of Reston, to purchase the shoes. Footsteps owner, Mr. Paul Zink generously volunteered a 20% discount, significantly increasing the number of shoes the firm is able to donate.

Due to the contributions of staff members, a matching corporate donation, and the 20% discount, Indigo IT is positioned to donate more running shoes to the Soldier Family Assistance Center at WRAMC than it has employees—approximately 31! The donation will augment the inventory at the Soldier and Family Assistance Center and their ability to support the 170 inpatients at WRAMC, 40 to 50 of which are wounded warriors.

The contribution of Indigo IT fills but one of many unmet needs the Soldier and Family Assistance Center has this holiday season. Indigo IT and its employees were heartened they could provide this support as a way of showing appreciation to the troops for their commitment and sacrifice.
